Pupillage

Third Six pupils

We have vacancies for third six pupils from time to time throughout the year particularly for criminal work although there are opportunities in other areas as well. If you are interested, you can have a chat with Carol Bull on 01473 346120 or send a CV with covering letter to her at the Ipswich Chambers.

12-Month Funded Pupillages

Each year we offer a number of funded pupillages of twelve months duration. We would expect applicants to have a commitment to the fields in which members practise. Pupils are allocated to pupil masters/mistresses on the basis of their interests, whether in crime, civil or family work, but pupillages are organised so as to give pupils experience in all areas. We would not normally consider applications from people who have not begun the Bar Vocational Course, though we may do so in exceptional circumstances.

The closing date for applications is 31 October in any year for entry the following Autumn, with interviews for short-listed candidates taking place early that year. Selection for the short-list is based on.

  1. academic performance, based on class of degree and, where relevant, scholarships, prizes and awards;
  2. involvement in activities involving advocacy, such as mooting and debating;
  3. commitment to the law as a profession as evinced, for example, by participation in mini-pupillages and placements with legal professionals
  4. engagement in other activities from which the applicant may have acquired skills appropriate to work at the Bar, such as employment, student clubs and societies, voluntary organisations, charities and so on.

Please note that although we have four sites, Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester and Chelmsford, all applications are considered by our Pupillage Committee and you do not need to apply to each centre. Application by CV with covering letter should be directed to Carol Bull at the Ipswich Chambers.

Mini-Pupils

We also welcome applications for mini-pupillages which usually last one week. A letter with CV and dates you are available should be directed in the first instance to the Mini-Pupillage Co-ordinator at your preferred centre.

Equality & Diversity

Chambers is totally committed to its policy of equality of opportunity and diversity and is keen to encourage applications from individuals  from ethnic minority groups or who may have a disability. If anyone with a disability who is contemplating applying for pupillage is concerned about accessibility issues they are welcome to discuss the matter in the first instance with the Chambers Administrator,  Carol Bull who can be reached on 01473 346120 or .
