The county town of Essex (and despite having a cathedral it is only a town), Chelmsford is an ancient settlement situate in the centre of the county, with a current population of around 120,000. A seat of justice since the thirteenth century, the town played a role in Wat Tyler's Peasants' Revolt in 1381 and at its assizes in the seventeenth century many of the victims of "Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins were tried and hanged for witchcraft. The town currently hosts a Tier 1 Crown Court, a County Court which is both a civil and care hearing centre, a magistrates and family proceedings court, and the administrative centre for HM Courts & Tribunals Service in Essex and East Anglia. Other nearby court centres are at Basildon and Southend, both to the south, and Harlow, to the west.

The walk from Chelmsford station to chambers takes approximately 15 minutes. Leaving the station, turn left on Duke Street and head towards the town centre. At the A1099 (Victoria Road South) turn right, but keep to the left hand side of the road until you reach the roundabout at Parkway, by the market and a multi-storey car park. Keep left along Parkway, crossing over the river, and with the Essex County Cricket Ground on the opposite side of the road. At the next junction take the underpass towards New London Road (west side), which may be signposted for the hospital and cricket ground. Keep on the west or right hand side of the road, past the junction with New Writtle Street until just beyond Lower Anchor Street. No 140 is a semi-detached building on the right.
The nearest public car park is at George Street, to the southeast of New London Road and between New Writtle Street and Anchor Street. Alternatively, use the multi-storey car park by the Parkway roundabout.
From the A12 (north and east) : Southbound, take the Chelmsford exit (junction 19 - A138) at Springfield and continue as far as the Army & Navy roundabout. Turn right on to Parkway. The car park entrance is at the far end.
