The oldest recorded town in the British Isles and one time capital of Roman Britain, Colchester was famously sacked by Boudica and her Iceni tribes and the Roman garrison put to the sword.  In 1648 during the English Civil War the town was again besieged, this time by Parliamentary forces who - unsportingly, and against the rules of war as then generally understood - summarily executed two of the leading Royalist commanders after accepting their surrender.  Today Colchester, with a population of around 108,000 at the last census, is still an important garrison town and site of the Military Corrective Training Centre.  The town has a County Court, magistrates and family proceedings court, and Courts martial take place at the garrison.

By rail

Colchester station (formerly Colchester North) is a stiff 15 minute walk from chambers, the last part of which is uphill.  Turn right outside the station, cross at the pedestrian crossing, and proceed towards the town centre.  Cross Cowdray Avenue by the next pedestrian crossing and continue towards the town (North Station Road).  After one more crossing at the foot of North Hill continue up hill and cross to the right hand side.  Just past the hotel at No 52 North Hill, and before the Sixth Form College, is a narrow vehicular entrance on the right.  53 North Hill is the detached building on the right.

There is a taxi stand outside the main entrance to the station.  Alternatively, take a bus to North Hill from the bus stop on the opposite side of the road near the first pedestrian crossing after leaving the station.

By road

From the north (A12/A120 junction) : Follow the road towards the town centre, turning right by the double roundabout at Cowdray Avenue.  At the next roundabout turn left (North Station Road).  After negotiating the mini-roundabout and roundabout at Middleborough, if you have arranged in advance to park at chambers, turn left towards St Peter's Street and then right, up North Hill, at the next traffic lights.  Otherwise, parking may be had in the multi-storey car park off St Peter's Street (straight ahead past North Hill, then follow signs to the right) or on Balkerne Hill, straight up the hill from the Middleborough roundabout, round the roundabout at the top, and in to the left near the top of the northbound, downhill carriageway.

From the south : Upon reaching Southway turn north down Balkerne Hill at the roundabout for the multi-storey car park or turn into Headgate and follow Head Street and then straight down North Hill for chambers.

From the west (A12 northbound) : Take the first sliproad for Colchester and at the first roundabout turn left for the Colchester by-pass (A133).  At the next roundabout turn right (Westway) as far as the Middleborough roundabout and continue as above.
