Head Of Criminal Team

Neil Macaulay read law at Nottingham Trent University and is the leader of our specialist criminal team

Called to the bar in 1990 Neil practises in all areas of criminal law for the prosecution and defence. He has undertaken cases involving murder, rape and other serious sexual offences, fraud, money laundering, public order, drugs and custom offences. He has a special interest in abuse of process cases.

He regularly represents military personnel charged with serious criminal offences at Courts Martial and completed a short service commission in the Army Legal Corps between 1992-6. During this time as a captain he prosecuted and defended soldiers, officers and dependants at District and General Courts Martial and Standing Civilian Courts in Germany. He also completed tours of service in Belize, Bosnia and Cyprus. Neil therefore has considerable experience of practice in the military courts and of the way of life of the armed forces. He is also instructed in Courts Martial Appeal Court work.

Neil spent seven years working in the Prosecutions Office of Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise and has substantial experience of national and cross border VAT, excise duty, drug trafficking and money laundering cases. Many of these prosecutions involved complex public interest immunity issues and required sensitive handling of the unique difficulties of disclosure in covert operations. As Head of the Prosecutions Group Legal Secretariat he had oversight and responsibility for all customs extradition cases and requests for overseas assistance.

Neil also undertakes firearms licensing work.

He is appointed to the Attorney Generals Unified list of Prosecution Counsel.
