EA Law welcomes new door tenants

20 October 2017

EA Law – East Anglian Chambers is delighted to announce a boost to its family team by the arrival of two experienced practitioners as door tenants.

Having recently purchased a house in the region Michael Horton and Ruth Cabeza, from different London chambers, are keen to add more local work to their practices so they can justify spending even more time in their new home.

Ruth (1998 call) is a specialist family law practitioner who has always maintained a broad practice encompassing both matrimonial and children (private and public law) cases. She is widely respected as a specialist in cases involving the cross-border movement of children and was delighted to be shortlisted for the Jordan Publishing award of International Family Lawyer of the Year in 2016.

Having co-authored International Adoption (Jordan Publishing, 2012) she is now frequently instructed in cases which involve intercountry adoption, both within a private and public law context. She was lead author of a report commissioned by the EU parliament to investigate the impact on freedom of movement within the EU resulting from the current absence of a framework for automatic mutual recognition of domestic adoption orders within the EU and has written on issues of surrogacy and inter-country adoption.

Over the last few years Ruth has acted in several high profile public law children cases where
the court has been concerned with the welfare of a child following the death of a younger
sibling as a result of non-accidental injuries.

Mike (1993 call) specialises in complex financial remedy cases and in property disputes between cohabitees or unmarried couples under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996. He has particular experience of appellate work and work with an international element, including child abduction work, under Brussels IIA and the Hague Convention. He also undertakes some children work (but not public law work), and some adult social care work.

In December 2014 Mike, who has also published on family issues, was appointed to the Family Procedure Rule Committee.
