Ian Glen QC

08 July 2016

EA Law – East Anglian Chambers regrets to announce the death yesterday of door tenant Ian Glen QC. Aged 65, he had been suffering from cancer.

Ian’s practice at the Bar began on the Western Circuit, following his call to the Bar in 1979. There he enjoyed a wide-ranging common law practice including industrial injury cases (for insurers and the TGWU) and matters involving the police, including civil jury actions, inquests and disciplinary proceedings. From 1983 onwards he took on many judicial review cases and appeals by way of case stated.

In crime his practice was equally wide-ranging. After taking silk in 1996 and moving to London, where he joined 5 King’s Bench Walk, he concentrated almost entirely on crime – with a little related defamation and the occasional venture into the Chancery Division in connection with asset seizures in criminal cases. There he was involved in very many high profile murder, fraud, drugs and conspiracy cases. In consequence Ian developed considerable expertise in a number of specialist legal areas – mobile phone evidence and call data, forensic science and cross-examination of experts generally, DNA, toxicology, pathology, blood distribution, CCTV, facial mapping, and false memory syndrome.

In 2003 Ian was elected a Bencher of Gray’s Inn. In 2012, after acquiring a cottage in Norfolk, he established a connection with EA Law – East Anglian Chambers as a door tenant and later gave a knowledgeable and gripping lecture at a crime seminar organised by chambers at the School of Law at UEA.

In his spare time Ian was a consummate after dinner speaker and also dabbled as a disc jockey on occasion.

We offer our sincere condolences to his family.
