SFO To Investigate G4S Tagging Firm
11 July 2013
Electronic tagging firms have been accused of overcharging.
Justice Secretary Chris Grayling told the House of Commons that an audit had revealed "a significant anomaly in the billing practices" of "tagging" contractors G4S and Serco, with charges being made for offenders who were already back in prison. Serco had agreed to participate in a forensic audit of its billing but G4S had not. The Serious Fraud Office would therefore be asked to investigate.
Launching a separate disciplinary investigation into how the contracts were managed by the Ministry of Justice, he said "The House will also be surprised and disappointed to learn that staff in the Ministry of Justice were aware of a potential problem and yet did not take adequate steps to address it."
