Dangerous driving is a more serious form of a careless driving offence. You will be guilty of dangerous driving if the standard of your driving fell far below that of a competent and careful driver.
A case of dangerous driving might be based on the manner of your driving or on the condition of your vehicle, if its poor condition makes it dangerous to other road users.
Convictions for dangerous driving is a serious matter and carries a range of sentences including up to a maximum of two years in prison if convicted by the Crown Court or 6 months if convicted in the Magistrates Court. You are also liable to a mandatory disqualification from driving for a minimum period of 12 months and you will be required to retake an extended driving test.
Careless driving is a similar, but less serious offence and is often offered as a lesser alternative to a charge of dangerous driving.
